Autumn
September brings a complex mix of excitement and melancholia with it, which is beautifully reflected in nature. Plump fruits are looking at their best, whilsts on the trees green leaves start their fading process by turning into very special colours. Firey and burnt shades of red, bright, golden and buttery yellows and even charming mauve-greys beautifully adorn curving and twisting branches.
Dahlias and zinnias are still going strong, the lime hydrangeas are starting to blush and getting picked to preserve. All sorts of seed pods have now formed and naturally dried in the garden, offering beautiful texture and sculptural additions for our arrangements.
When the first frost hits, generally around the beginning of November, the abundance of summer and harvest season comes to an end. Flower farmers might tend to the last few plants in the polytunnels – like Chrysanthemums and Lilies – and start prepping for the following year.
We start looking at the striking silhouettes of the now naked tree branches, adorned with catkins and cones. Our designs will turn, like the landscape around us, from luscious to more ethereal and sculptural.
